The Humanities major with the Applied Science track is a pre-professional program designed especially for people who plan to further their studies at the graduate level in such fields as chemistry, physics, or engineering.
Broader than a Biology major, Applied Science gives students technical expertise in areas of science and math, along with the breadth and depth of a Humanities background. You’ll learn how to research, read, and think your way through abstract problems, while also acquiring foundational knowledge and skills for working with and understanding people.
Several graduates have used this degree to prepare for medical school or some other medical field such as physical therapy.

Naomi Maunu graduated from Maranatha in 2006 with a degree in Humanities-Applied Science. She earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Southwest Baptist University. Maunu now works for Peak Performance, a rehabilitation outpatient orthopedic physical therapy clinic in Springfield, MO. “Maranatha really gives you the groundwork you need for later,” Maunu said. “The Applied Sciences courses gave me a backbone to build on.”

As a physician in China, Dr. Yingguang Liu specialized in studying infectious diseases such as chronic viral hepatitis B. He soon grew disillusioned by the expensive medicines doctors were urged to prescribe in exchange for money rebates from drug companies. “How long should I make a living through drug rebates without doing research on the virus?” he wondered.
Dr. Liu left for America in 1997 to study viruses, but the Lord had greater plans. A picnic with loving Chinese Christians led to Bible studies that eventually caused him to give up his Marxist beliefs and trust Jesus Christ as his Savior. After his wife joined him, she also committed her life to Christ. “By that time, finding a cure for hepatitis B was no longer the number one goal of my life,” says Dr. Liu. “My people needed a cure for their dead souls more than their sick livers!”
After completing his PhD at Ohio University, Dr. Liu answered the call to join Maranatha’s science faculty in 2002. He has taught microbiology, anatomy, and other science classes, while taking classes in Bible, Greek, and Baptist heritage. “These were subjects I had longed to learn for years,” Liu said.
