New Nursing Department faculty member Susan Rasmussen says Christian nurses have a duty to people who are sick and dying, both physically and spiritually.
“I see Christian nurses as being salt and light in a part of society that reaches everyone,” said Rasmussen, who has nearly 25 years of nursing and health education experience.
She married Carl Rasmussen in 1989, one year after earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Carl now works as a musical instrument repair specialist in Madison. The Rasmussens have two teenage children, Megan and Evan.
Susan pursued a busy career as a nurse in the cardiac intensive care unit at St. Joseph Medical Center while attempting to instill a love for God and a love for music in her children. The family was significantly involved in church music at Tri-City Baptist Church in Independence, MO. Carl directed the church orchestra and youth choir for several years. Susan played French horn in the orchestra and sang in choir.
Megan enrolled at Maranatha in the fall of 2011 and has played volleyball for the Crusaders during her freshman and sophomore years. Evan is a freshman at Maranatha Academy.
Medical ministry opportunities abound today, Rasmussen said, adding to the importance of thorough education, field experience, and understanding of Scripture for future nurses. She recommends Maranatha as a place for Christian nurses to pursue this goal. Maranatha is the only fundamental Christian college with both regional accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission and a nursing program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
Rasmussen said fundamental, Bible-based teaching and accreditation are two factors that help promote high quality and integrity in Maranatha’s nursing graduates. She added, “The nursing faculty is second to none!”
The opportunity to minister to others as a nurse has given way to a new ministry for Rasmussen.
“God has given me a love for teaching, and I am so thankful for the opportunity to use my talents and abilities here at MBBC for His glory.”
