PLYMOUTH, Minn. – The Crusaders softball season began on Thursday with three games, losing 14-8 and 10-9 to North Central and Presentation respectively before winning 10-9 against Martin Luther College.
In the win over Martin Luther, the Crusader’s were down 4-1 in the first inning before junior second baseman Kristin Morrison’s single ignited a six-run inning off four hits to end the second inning.
Martin Luther reeled off five runs of their own in the top of the fourth to tie the game, but a double off the bat of shortstop Rosa Lewis (Yates City, Ill.) scored Torey DeLozier (Watertown, Wis.) to seal the win.
Freshman Jana Dempsey (Bath, Mich.) earned her first win of the season after losing to Presentation College, going 1-1.
Sophomore pitcher Rachel Ryan (Nampa, Idaho) pitched six innings while allowing 13 earned runs to take the loss to North Central.
In their first game against North Central, the Crusaders were upended by the Rams after trailing 13-2 in the fourth inning. Maranatha did manage a six-run inning in the top of the fifth, but never caught the Rams.
In a loss to Presentation, Maranatha tied the game on a single by Autumn Peotter (Waupaca, Wis.). Presentation came right back with a run in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the win.
Peotter finished the day with eight hits and six RBI’s, hitting an in-the-park grand slam while Morrison finished with five hits in eleven at-bats for six RBI’s.
Dempsey also hit well tallying six hits in twelve at-bats with six RBI’s.
Maranatha will face North Central at 8:50 a.m., Presentation College at 11:00 a.m. before finishing up the tournament against Martin Luther at 12:50 p.m. on Friday.
