Crusaders Defeat Lincoln, Lose to Rams In Regional Openers

COON RAPIDS, Minn. – The Crusaders opened the NCCAAII Regional Tournament in Coon Rapids with a 3-2 win against Lincoln followed by a 4-2 loss to North Central.

In their first game, junior pitcher Craig Lawson (Independence, Mo.) pitched a complete game and Maranatha overcame a 2-0 deficit by scoring all three runs in the fourth inning.

Chris Von Holt (Stony Point, N.Y.) and Jeremy Mattson (Ashwaubenon, Wis.) kicked off the inning with singles, while catcher Andy Timblin doubled to score both runners.

Lawson pitched seven innings, allowing four hits while striking out six batters.

Mattson and Nathan Lyle (Oregon, Wis.) each finished 2-3 from the plate.

In the loss to North Central, Maranatha held a 1-0 lead in the first before the Rams tied the game in the second and took the lead in the fourth inning.

Von Holt later drove in junior Garett Ordway (Pensacola, Fla.) to cut the deficit to 4-2, but Maranatha failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities, leaving the bases loaded.

The Crusaders face Lincoln Christian at 11:00 a.m. in an elimination game.
