WATERTOWN, Wis. – The Crusaders did not go down without a fight in 17-7 and 13-4 losses to Rockford on Monday evening.
In a game one that included 26 hits between both teams, Rockford was the first to score and held a 6-0 lead after the second inning.
Maranatha crept back into the game with two runs apiece in the second and third innings.
Sophomore outfielder Jeremy Mattson (Ashwaubenon, Wis.) had a double RBI and Nathan Lyle’s single in the third cut the deficit to 6-4.
The Crusaders added three runs in the fourth inning, but still trailed 13-7 and stranded runners in scoring position.
Junior pitcher Derek Funkhouser (Paris, Ill.) pitched seven innings for the loss to drop to 0-5.
Junior second baseman Jason Garrison (Watertown, Wis.) had a strong day at the plate, going 3-5 with two RBI’s.
Maranatha struggled in game two despite tying Rockford at 11 hits apiece.
The team’s first run came in the fifth with Garrison’s RBI. The team would later force Rockford to nine innings after scoring 3 runs in the eighth.
Junior pitcher Garett Ordway (Pensacola, Fla.) went four innings, allowing four hits and one earned run for the loss.
Garrison finished game two 3-4 with an RBI while Joel Borchardt (Watertown, Wis.) was 2-4 with an RBI.
The team travels to Coon Rapids, Minn. to face Lincoln Christian at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24.
