KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Crusaders had a tough draw in game one, facing the #1 Clearwater Christian, but proved up to the task despite losing a competitive 3-0 match on Thursday afternoon.
Clearwater held an 11-9 shot advantage in the first half, but it was Maranatha that had six shots on goal compared to the opponent’s four, and neither team scored for a 0-0 halftime tie.
Clearwater finally broke free with a goal by Whitney Redemann at the 65 minute mark for the 1-0 lead. The team added two more goals in the waning minutes of the game to claim the victory, but it was the #4 Crusaders that came away with an impressive performance against the #1 seed in the tournament.
Senior midfielder Jocelyn Enrique (Anahoca, Hawaii) finished the day with five shots while sophomore forward Taylor Thompson (Bristol, Wis.) posted three shots, two on goal.
Clearwater ended with 19 shots (10 on goal), while Maranatha posted 15 shots (six on goal).
Freshman goalkeeper Michala Marino (Grand Blanc, Mich.) finished with seven saves in 90 minutes.
Maranatha moves on to face #5 North Central University at 5:00 p.m. EST on Friday.
