‘Sader Pitching Snag Opening Wins

Andy TimblinLINCOLN, Ill. – Maranatha earned their first two wins of the season, 3-1 and 6-2 on solid pitching and timely hitting against the Lincoln Red Lions on Saturday afternoon.

Maranatha’s first win came by the arm of senior Derek Funkhouser (Paris, Ill), who held the Red Lions to just two hits in seven innings.

Maranatha scored all three runs in the second inning, taking advantage of several passed balls and singles from freshmen Timothy Rogers and Cody Borland.

Funkhouser did the rest, striking out seven for his first win of the season.

In the second game, Lincoln jumped on the scoreboard first with two runs in the first inning, but the Crusaders charged right back with a four-run onslaught in the second, with a single from Borland.

Senior pitcher Tim Shelp (Independance, Mo.) stifled the Red Lions for the remainder of a chilly day, striking out 12 batters while allowing just three hits, also snagging his first win of the season.

Shelp also went 4-6 at the plate while Borland finished 2-4 with an RBI in his first collegiate action.

The team continues their spring break trip with a 1:00 p.m. EST game against Tennessee Temple on Monday in Chattanooga, Tenn.
