PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The #1 ranked Lakeland Muskies proved too much for the men’s basketball team in a 95-65 loss on Thursday evening.

The Muskies spoiled the return of a full Maranatha squad with all starters in the lineup after nearly two months. Sophomore center Brett Cashner (Urbana, Ill.) was back in the lineup after suffering a foot injury and had six points in 19 minutes.

Maranatha held an 11-11 tie with the Muskies on a three-pointer by guard Tanner Moses (Lodi, Wis.), and kept the deficit to single digits for most of the first half before Lakeland opened up a 45-29 halftime lead.

The Muskies heated up in the second-half, shooting 51% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc, receiving 12 points from Joey Burris on 5-6 shooting.

Maranatha struggled from three-point range, shooting 25% and were outrebounded 49-33 by a bigger Lakeland team.

“We didn’t play real well, but give credit to a well-coached, long and athletic Lakeland team. It was the first time we had our starting lineup and had Andrew acclimating to the system. Matt McGivern and Tanner Moses played well and kept us together for spurts but they had our number tonight,” head coach Keith Salscheider stated.

Transfer Andrew Gunst (Neosho, Wis.) saw his first minutes as a Crusader at the forward position and had a rebound in 11 minutes.

The team was led by McGivern’s 16 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and two steals while Moses added 17 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Maranatha faces Dominican University in River Forest, Ill. on Saturday at 4:15 p.m.
