Creating or Converting an Online Course

Residential faculty wishing to convert a class to a hybrid or 100% online course should start the approval process at least one semester or two DE cycles before the course will be offered, so the course can be advertised in the semester’s course offerings list.

Process to Get an Online Course Approved and Created

  • Complete the Online Course Creation form online ideally by February 15 of the spring semester and September 15 of the fall semester.
    • The form is sent to your department chair and the distance education chair. Departmental brainstorming and feedback may be an excellent idea at this stage in the course design, but involving others in the discussion is up to the instructor and the department chair. The department chair should sign this form and email it back to you.
  • Forward the signed departmental copy you received from your department chair to the Registrar’s Office and the VP for Academic Affairs.
    • They will evaluate all the course requests at one time and respond back to you by March 15 and October 15. Note: courses that cater to freshmen or graduate students will be given approval priority.
  • Meet with the distance education chair (required only the first time you convert a traditional course or create an online or hybrid class).
  • Take Maranatha's 4-week Teaching Online Overview Course (required only for faculty teaching in Maranatha's online program the first-time).
  • Complete the Learning Activities chart and a email a tentative syllabus to the distance education chair (online@mbbc.edu).
    • The distance education chair will review it and then forward it to the department chair, the Registrar’s Office, and the VP for Academic Affairs.
    • If you have not heard any concerns within one week of submitting these documents, you may move forward with the course design.

The DE chair and VP for Academic Affairs will draw up a contract (or work the class into your course load), based on your credentials. The administration reserves the right to close any sections for which fewer than 5 students are registered.
