Because Christ-honoring music is an essential part of worship, Maranatha’s caring, high-caliber music instructors are dedicated to teaching music majors to develop their God-given abilities for ministry in the local church.
Music majors who select the Church Music track enjoy a program centered on excellence and ministry versatility. Courses such as Harmony 1 through 4, Hymnology, and Music in the Local Church will give you the needed skills to integrate Scripture, music, instruments, and voice into worship services. In addition to excellent academic training, you’ll benefit from a Church Music internship and opportunities to participate in Maranatha’s choirs, band, and ensembles. A minor in church music is available to students in a non-music discipline.
Major
Music majors will choose the emphasis of their musical training in Church Music, Piano Pedagogy, Performance, or String Pedagogy. If you pursue Church Music, you will become part of a program centered on excellence and service versatility.
In addition to coursework, the Church Music program requires a recital and an internship in a local church.
The Church Music major requires a minimum of 128 semester hours, with 74 of them in Church Music. Some key courses include Baroque--Early Classical Music History, Hymnology, Music in the Local Church, and Choral Arranging. Also required are courses in the Biblical Studies Core and the General Studies Core.
Minor
Students in a non-music major discipline may choose to minor in music with an emphasis in church music. This 22-25 hour program prepares students to serve competently in every aspect of their local church's music ministry.
Key courses in Harmony 1 & 2, Music in the Local Church, Hymnology, Intro to Vocal Studies, Diction for Singers, and several courses covering techniques of the student's chosen instrument.
Concentration
A music concentration with a church music emphasis provides the non-music major the opportunity to sharpen his or her music skills for ministry in the local church. The 16-17 hour program benefits those who wish to serve as lay accompanists, choir directors, church orchestra members or conductors, and music program coordinators while engaged in another profession.
Key courses include Harmony 1, Basic Music Literature, Hymnology, and courses covering techniques of the student's chosen instrument.
