Students ~ Tutors ~ Writing Lab
The Learning Assistance Program is designed to assist students who have exhibited difficulty in previous or current academic achievement. Tutors are trained to assist with various learning styles and to help students with time management, test-taking, written assignments, or general academic skills. The tutors and remedial classes are available to all students, but some students may be required to have a tutor and/or participate in remedial classes as a condition of the final acceptance decision. There is no fee for students taking 12-to-18 hours. There is a $10 per hour Writing Lab fee.
Learning Resources
1. Some students benefit from one-on-one tutoring. This request should go to the Director of Learning Assistance who will match the student’s needs with a tutor’s strengths. There is no charge for this service. However, once initiated, regular attendance is required. After one “cut,” a system of fines is enforced for non-attendance.
2. Group tutoring is available for certain math and science courses.
3. Writing Lab is offered for any student who requests this service. The student contacts the Director of Learning Assistance in advance and a one-on-one tutor is provided on an as-needed basis. This is available for any step in the writing process.
4. Supplemental Instruction will be used for Anatomy and Physiology. With this program, a student who has previously taken this course and has done well will attend class, take the tests, and conduct study groups during the week to help any students who wish to participate. Participation is voluntary and does not have to be on a regular basis. Class members may attend these groups on an as-needed basis.
5. Weekly Study Skills Seminars will be offered for the first six weeks of every semester. These are open to all students. Each seminar will address a different area of study skills. The topic for each seminar will be well advertised in advance. Participation is voluntary but it is strongly urged for students admitted on Academic Assistance 1 and 2. It is also recommended for students on Academic Alert, Warning and Probation.
