2009 Faculty/Staff Picnic
Glorious late-summer weather, fun games, fellowship, and untimely tipping of canoes were among the high points for approximately 275 Maranatha employees and their families attending the Faculty/Staff Picnic Aug. 18 at Harnischfeger Park near Ixonia.
Staff members were dismissed early to enjoy the event, which took place at the large park in a country setting (just off of Crawfish Road) that offered plenty of activities for all ages. A nine-hole putt-putt golf course proved the most popular, but there was also disc golf, sand volleyball, basketball, horseshoes, fishing, hiking and canoeing.
Interim Executive Officer Dr. Robert Loggans spoke before the meal, encouraging employees to demonstrate Christian love and concern for each other. The potluck style dinner was a combination of catered food and items brought by those attending. Most who ate the meal lingered to talk, and some participated in activities they had missed earlier in the day.
Dr. Darryl Sturgill, Administrative Assistant and Chief Operating Officer, acted as the primary organizer and emcee. He was forced to do so under adverse conditions, however, having been unceremoniously dumped into the Rock River just minutes earlier. The boat he shared with Fine Arts Chair Dr. David Ledgerwood struck a dock as they paddled furiously to the finish of the canoe race.
Tyler Holley and Drew DeLozier were the eventual winners of that race, edging Vice President of Business Affairs Mark Stevens and daughter Laura by 1 second. Admissions graduate assistant Geoffrey Stertz finished first in the wiffleball long drive, the family disc golf competition was won by the Stevens and the Owens family earned the lowest score in the family putt-putt contest.
Many Maranatha family members stopped by to express thanks to Liberty Mutual Insurance representative Matt Steiner, whose company helped defray the costs of the event.
