Affectionately called "Dr. Ledge" by his students, David Ledgerwood is Chair of the Fine Arts Department and an associate professor, directing the Chamber Singers touring choir and teaching music classes. With a master’s in Sacred Music from Pensacola Christian College and a master’s in Music Theory and Composition from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, he has had more than 50 works published, including Music Investigations (a 30-day Bible study), piano accompaniments for the Heritage Band Series (David E. Smith Publications), and vocal and instrumental arrangements/compositions with various publishers. Dr. Ledgerwood and his wife, Kim, have eight children and attend a local Baptist church where he regularly participates in choir, playing organ and piano, and accompanying special numbers.

Creative people can glorify God in unique ways. If you are gifted in music, drama, photography, video, or website design and want to develop those talents for the Lord, Maranatha’s Department of Fine Arts is dedicated to helping you perfect skills and prepare for service.

If you become part of the music program, choose a track for performing with your voice or instrument, teaching piano or strings, or developing your talents for a church music ministry. There are also incredible opportunities for learning in the communications programs. If you choose a Dramatic Productions minor, you will have opportunities to audition for plays and musicals ranging from Anastasia and HMS Pinafore to the ever-popular Christmas Carol. Considering a New Media Communications or Photography minor? You will have access to exciting new video and photo equipment as well as technological tools that will help you construct a website to enhance the message of a business or ministry.

Alumni Focus

During a summer music camp as a teenager, alumnus Scott Brier surrendered to do whatever the Lord wanted. Later, as a music major at Maranatha, Scott’s desire to serve through music was confirmed as he traveled as the pianist for a Maranatha ensemble in 1981. Today he enjoys serving as the music director and assistant pastor at Fostoria Baptist Church in Fostoria, Michigan.

"The philosophy I was taught at Maranatha was very biblical and balanced and has helped me greatly in ministries that the Lord called me to," he says. "Music is to glorify God and secondarily to edify man. It should communicate God and His Word accurately so that people might worship God and grow in His grace."
