National Guard Pay-Off

Alumnus John Magnus funded college as a member of the military

I have always admired members of the United States military. Growing up, I watched these men and women give their lives for our country. Their sacrifice challenged me to serve America as well. After my high school graduation, I struggled internally between two desires: serving my country–and serving my God. I knew the Lord was calling me into ministry, so I put my military dreams aside and pursued a Church Ministries degree instead at Maranatha Baptist Bible College.

Just when I thought God had asked me to sacrifice my military dreams forever, I met a reservist from the 115th Fighter Wing in Madison, Wisconsin. I suddenly understood that my dream to serve in the military did not have to be in competition with my calling to serve God. Just two months later I was sworn in to the United States Air Force. God, in His grace, gave me back my dream.

During my college days, I served for four years as a firefighter with the 115th Fighter Wing of the Air National Guard at Truax Field in Madison, Wisconsin. I worked on the flight line, drove big fire trucks, and watched planes take off all day long. During my third year I received the Airman of the Quarter award for my base and was nominated for Airman of the Year. I loved my job and my service, and I never regret my decision to join the Air National Guard.

God blessed me in four specific ways during my career with the Air National Guard. First, I grew tremendously through training and active duty. My perspective on life changed entirely as I truly became a man. Second, I was able to continue my education while pursuing my military career. National Guard reservists must give only one weekend per month and fifteen additional training days per year to the military, which allowed me plenty of time to fulfill my educational obligations. Third, I paid for college with my National Guard salary. After joining the military, my college financial needs were met without difficulty through National Guard drill pay, GI Bill benefits, tuition reimbursement, and the student loan repayment program. Finally, I was able to serve my country. During my freshman year, when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center, I wanted nothing more than to rush to America’s defense. The next year I fulfilled that desire, spending four months in central Iraq north of Baghdad. Knowing I helped keep America safe continues to be my greatest honor.

The United States Air Force provides career and education opportunities in a culture of excellence. If you are interested in becoming a part of the world's greatest Air Force and earning money for your college education, I encourage you to visit the Air National Guard website at www.goang.com.
