President's List

Honoring student scholars

Maranatha’s best and brightest gathered Tuesday night for chicken Cordon Bleu and to grill college President Dr. Charles Phelps.

“Grill” may be a bit extreme, actually. Phelps did good-naturedly field a variety of questions from 41 of the 70 students who achieved all A’s during the spring 2008 semester without any incompletes or overcuts. Those President’s List students were first treated to a special dinner in the Dining Complex.

“When I look around me, I see student leaders,” Phelps said. “This is a personal burden, and a passion. I’m big on what’s happening here, and I’m excited about it.”

Phelps’ wife, Linda, took notes as students posed questions on topics ranging from critical to peripheral.

The most serious and lengthy discussion concerned lack of communication from the college on the details of a scholarship program for seniors. The most light-hearted and (ahem) briefest topic was on the requirement for dress clothing for men in the dining hall—a ruling sparked by Phelps’ personal observation that some male students were experiencing difficulty making shirt and pants meet.

Other questions included requests for increased hours for Old Main Café and the college post office, the possibility of language requirements being waived for students who pass Advanced Placement tests, and the potential for extending payment deadlines for ROTC cadets because the military’s payment schedule does not accurately match Maranatha’s calendar.

Phelps was also able to utilize the opportunity to reinforce some of the positives that have taken place during the early part of the first semester.

He noted the advent of the dorm-based ministry societies, adding that the weekly meetings are to help the officers be able to more effectively organize the activities to come. “Because it is new, our desire has been to get a footing under it,” Phelps said.

Phelps said it was “neat” to hear from one of the cadets that the 22-member ROTC company may be the largest percentage of the student body of any Wisconsin college. He noted the impending opening of Maranatha Baptist Seminary and its postgraduate programs and the addition of the Cross Cultural Studies major and Ancient Languages and New Media Communications minors this fall.

“We’re always looking at new programs with a high student appeal,” Phelps said. “We want to lead the market rather than playing catch-up.”
