Youth Movement for 2009
The 2009 season will be a youth movement for Maranatha Crusader volleyball. The Crusaders lost 6 players to graduation who each played at least 100 of the 110 games last season. Only 3 returning players played in 100 games last year, and the lone senior on the team is a first-year player.
The six stellar seniors—Jessica Beichy, Deborah Giegerich, Kedra DeLozier, Holly Peterson, Joelle (Isaacs) Peterson, and Rose Peterson—led the 2008 Crusaders to a 16-14 record including a 7-7 record in Northern Athletics Conference play. In NCCAA play the 2008 team went 6-2 and advanced to the Midwest Regional Championship before losing to Lincoln Christian College.
With the loss of the seniors, many starting positions will be up-for-grabs during the preseason. “We have an absolutely very young team,” Coach DeLozier said. “We are going to have to work hard in the preseason to see what we have and to put the right combination on the floor.” One of Coach DeLozier’s greatest challenges will be finding that starting rotation and giving them time to play together. “They have got to get some practice time together because it is going to be a whole new group,” Coach DeLozier said.
Of the returning players, juniors Sammi Pagel (Coleman, Wis.) and Keelin Nissley (Alexandria, Va.) will be taking leadership roles with the team. Pagel will be starting at the libero position after serving as the defensive specialist for the last 2 years. Nissley, a 5-11 middle hitter, will be the only returning front-row player who received significant playing time in 2008. “Keelin will have a huge role to develop our youth at the front row,” Coach DeLozier said.
Julie Muse, a 5-9 senior from Watertown, Wis., will be a first-year player after playing soccer the previous 4 years at Maranatha. Muse and Jenny Fredericks (Minneapolis, Minn.), a 5-6 junior, will be in the mix for the outside hitter positions.
Mix in some good freshman recruits, and the Crusaders could surprise some people in the Northern Athletics Conference and in the NCCAA. “I think we have some great freshman recruits coming in,” Coach DeLozier said. “If we can get some of these freshmen jumpstarted, we could surprise some people.”
The Crusaders start play on the first weekend of September at the Faith Baptist Bible College Tournament in Ankeny, Iowa. The Crusaders will face NCCAA foes Central Bible College, Trinity Bible College, and Faith Baptist Bible College on September 4 and 5.
The Crusaders will then continue the brutal 3-week stretch at the Cardinal Stritch Triangular, the Northland International Triangular, and the Ripon Tournament during the next two weekends. “We have our work cut out for us during those first 3 weekends,” Coach DeLozier said. “But, I think we should be very competitive.”
Lakeland College (Sheboygan, Wis.) will again be the favorite to win the Northern Athletics Conference. Lincoln Christian College (Lincoln, Ill.) will be the team to beat in the NCCAA Midwest Region.
The first home match will be Tuesday, September 22 against Marian University at 7:00 p.m.
