Who SAAC is, what it does
Kris Lloyd says the first step to encouraging student participation in SAAC is to let folks know exactly what SAAC is.

The Student Athletic Advisory Committee serves as a conduit between the students and the Athletic Department. Members and officers discuss issues related to athletics at Maranatha and also help form student committes to provide staffing at games and promote spirit and sportsmanship.
Contact your team’s SAAC representative with ideas and concerns. The student body is welcome to express their ideas and concerns to any SAAC member. There is also a suggestion box.

“We do act in an advisory role, but we’d like SAAC to be much more personal,” said Lloyd (right), a senior softball player and president of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. “We want students to know this is an opportunity for them to be involved.”
The role of SAAC is to communicate students’ concerns to the Athletic Department and administration, but also help coordinate student-related activities at campus athletic events. A recent meeting included discussions of a fan club, the design of fan T-shirts, and forming committees to organize in-game activities like halftime contests and tailgate parties for the 2009-10 seasons.
“We want to make sure the atmosphere at our games is a legitimate college athletics atmosphere,” Lloyd said. “If we don’t, it’s a poor testimony to the other schools in our conference.”
Fellow officers Samantha Pagel and Kedra DeLozier agreed with Lloyd, and also noted some of the other functions associated with SAAC.
- Joining SAAC members at other Northern Athletics Conference schools for a canned food drive.
- Joining SAAC members at other NAC schools to provide blankets for underprivileged children.
- Organizing activities promoting fan sportsmanship and appreciation.
- Organizing students to help with the sale of advertising for the media guide and fan T-shirts.
“We want to open up these opportunities to all of the students, to let them know what they can do to be involved with our athletic program here,” DeLozier said.
SAAC conducts one meeting each month. Each sport elects two representatives to the group. Students with questions or concerns about the athletic program can contact a SAAC officer directly or submit a question through the group’s online suggestion box here.
