Under the direction of Dr. Dave Brown (and accompanied by his wife, Ruth Brown), the choir performs a wide assortment of sacred music including psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, classic works and spirituals. The choir sings a cappella, or with handbells, wind instruments, strings or piano.
The choir normally tours for one week each year. Madrigal, Chambers, and the Band are on a three-year rotation in which one group travels during the fall. In the same rotation, one performing group takes an extended tour that includes spring break, enabling travel to more distant states. The choir also performs locally, on campus, and for regional conferences.
The Madrigal and Handbell Choir seeks to minister for the Lord to the spiritual relationships of the choir members, college family, community, and church constituency in an honorable and edifying manner that is enriching and deepening, clear and beautiful. Open auditions are held at the beginning of each fall semester.
The Madrigal and Handbell Choir recently completed a nine-day tour through Minnesota, singing in approximately 15 services over the course of that week.
The Madrigal and Handbell Choir is the oldest performing group on campus, founded in 1968, the first year of Maranatha with 17 members and 37 bells. It now tours with 49 singers and five octaves of handbells, each member receiving one or two handbells.
