Registration
- To ensure a time slot in the prep school, please mail in your first payment upon registration. Students will not be considered officially registered until the Prep School receives the first payment.
Materials Needed
- Piano (must be full size, touch sensitive, and tuned regularly if an acoustic piano)
- Metronome (all students)
- Flashcards (beginners and intermediate students need Hal Leonard Set A and B)
- Full-size spiral bound notebook
- Piano books (chosen by the teacher)
- Email Address (All communication including billing is done via email and the website. Each family MUST have an email address that is checked weekly.)
Attendance Policy
- Tuition is for enrollment, not attendance.
- As a courtesy, students need to notify their instructors if they are unable to attend a private or group class.
- Lessons missed by students, regardless of the reason, will be neither rescheduled nor refunded.
- Students’ accounts will be credited for a teacher’s absence. In other words, no make-up lessons will be taught. (If a student needs/desires additional lessons for whatever reason, his/her account will be billed accordingly.)
- Inclement Weather Days: If the college cancels classes due to inclement weather, the prep school is also closed. An email notification will be sent to both students and teachers. Accounts will not be credited for group classes, but a credit will be given for private lessons. (Inclement Weather credits will ONLY be given if the college cancels classes.)
Using the “Swap List” to Resolve Scheduling Conflicts
- Students with a scheduling conflict need to arrange a “swap” with another student.
- The lesson exchange list is a resource that enables the parent to rearrange a lesson with another student when a conflict arises.
- The parent will call or email the students on the lesson exchange list to arrange a lesson “swap.” Note: Interns with 6 or fewer students will offer alternative times that they usually use for practicing.
- Please leave your teacher a voicemail or e-mail when a “swap” has been arranged.
- The lesson exchange is for a one-time conflict—not a permanent trade.
- An updated lesson exchange list for each teacher will be posted on https://maranatha.musicteachershelper.com/ under “resources.”
Practice Time
- The parent should help the student organize his/her day to include the required practice time in an uninterrupted location.
- Students MUST practice regularly, recording their practice sessions in their notebook daily.
- Students need to read their weekly assignments-practicing directions in their notebooks daily.
- Two shorter practice sessions per day are preferable over one lengthy session.
- While we encourage students to be more goal oriented in their practice time (as opposed to time oriented), students must practice no less than 2 hours per week on a consistent basis.
- Students failing to adhere to this policy for more than 3 weeks in a semester may be asked to suspend their lessons for one semester.
- Please note our minimum recommended daily practice time: Beginners—15-20 minutes; Intermediate—30-45 minutes; Advanced—1 hour
Participation in Recitals and Professional Evaluation Programs
- Students ages 5-17 are required to participate in the semester recitals and at least one professional evaluation program unless special permission is obtained from the student’s teacher for extenuating circumstances. For options, please see “Professional Eval Programs.”
Parent/Teacher Communication and Progress Reports
- Parents need to see the teacher at the close of the student’s lesson to briefly discuss the student’s assignments.
- Parents should read the student’s notebook weekly as the student’s progress will be evident from the teacher’s written comments.
- During the 6th week of the semester, parents are asked to attend the first 5 minutes of the student’s lesson to discuss the student’s overall progress.
- Semester Progress Reports for private lessons will be e-mailed one time a semester (upon request).
Waiting List Procedure
- All of the piano prep school faculty maintain a waiting list. While students may request to be placed on a specific faculty instructor’s waiting list (email jtschida@mbbc.edu), faculty instructors reserve the right to accept new students based on schedule openings as well as the student’s level, potential, goals, and work ethic. Also, an audition may be required.
Fingernails and Hand Washing
- Students need to clip their fingernails and wash their hands before their lessons.
Copyright
- Please carefully observe copyright laws. Copies are only made with the assumption that the student is in the process of purchasing the book.
Conflicts/Problems
- Because conflicts are a natural part of any educational endeavor, open communication is strongly encouraged and appreciated between the student, parent, piano instructor, and prep school director.
- Any conflicts or problems that may arise during the course of the semester should immediately be brought to the attention of the Prep School Director.
Cancellation Policy
- Maranatha Piano Prep School reserves the right to cancel group lessons with insufficient enrollment.
- Group Classes that do not meet minimum enrollment 24 hours before the first class may be canceled.
Lesson Termination
- In the event of irregular attendance, repeated failure to prepare assigned material, or inappropriate behavior during the lesson, the instructor reserves the right to terminate lessons.
- A one-month trial period with parent notification will precede lesson termination.
Permission Waiver
- Maranatha Piano Prep School reserves absolute rights and permission to use, reproduce, copy, exhibit, or distribute any videotape, audiotape, photographs, or computer files in which the student may be included for use in the Prep School newsletter, publicity, or any other such purpose.
